I recently read a lovely little book called Thirty Six, By Daron D. Fraley. I really got into this book because I could so fit myself into the man's shoes. This MC is pretty much the guy I married. He's a complete and unrepentant geek but brilliant and kind. My Sweetheart once tried to pry a gecko out of a glue trap intact. He nurses baby doves back to life. He once lent an online friend money he never got back so the man could eat. Yeah. Just like Aaron, he's that kind of man.

So when I read about Aaron Cohen, who befriends and defends friendless little boys and their waif-like mothers, I knew what Daron was talking about. These are men who would go clear across the country to save a friend from an abusive boyfriend or feed homeless guys in the park.

And these are the kinds of things the Thirty Six will need to do in order to keep God from utterly fire-storming the Earth. I found this book engaging and sweet. I wanted to see what happened to Aaron and Mandie and whether they would end up together. I felt his angst when he thought of Mandie. I wanted things to be right for Aaron, even though in real life that will often not be the case. Some people make incredible sacrifices without any visible payback in this life.

I enjoyed the mysterious artifact part, and the Hebrew element. It gave the story just the right amount of spice.

So. I've read Thirty Six, enjoying the delicious mystery and adventure of it. Now I want to read the sequel. Hurry up and write it, Daron. I'm impatiently waiting.

Intriguing tale of the old world and the new coming together with little-known and little-understood religious history. Don't miss this novella that will have you turning pages long after you should have put out the lights.
If average-guy getting mixed up in an ancient legend sounds like your type of book, I'd recommend checking this one out. It includes a clean love story along with some action. I found the main character easy to like and easy to cheer for. And the Old Testament tie-ins were pretty cool.
I am deeply impressed with Mr. Fraley's writing skill. His books grip me personally after just a few pages. I am an avid reader and have no trouble enjoying "okay" tales from "okay" authors. However, I am seldom moved by modern writers as much as I have by Mr. Fraley in Thrity-six. I didn't just root for the protagonist, I identified with him. The pain of the hurting in story touched my heart as if the people were real to me. What little was "predictable" was elemental to the flow of the story and in no wise detracted from it's depth. I await, in eager anticipation, further books by this great author.
Aaron is a very likeable guy. This book had plenty of action around every corner. It didn't take me long to be involved in this book to the point of not wanting to put it down. I wanted to know what happened to Aaron and who would try to hurt him next. I couldn't wait to see how he would finally win Mandie. The black onyx stones were amazing and made for a good story. Daron kept me guessing throughout the entire book. He s a great writer.
The second Book in the series is now available, so I had to reread the first one before reading it. I'm so glad I did, because I had forgotten quite a bit in two years. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. It is about a legend which becomes believable as the story unfolds. There is mystery, intrigue, romance, murder, and history. An enjoyable read!
I found this to be a very compelling book. Aaron is a very normal, if not somewhat awkward guy. But then again, if we are really honest aren't we all? He struggles with his spiritual identity, and is still called by God. He has suffered significant emotional trauma and yet cares for others rather than turning cold and jaded. And that care for others is his calling. Be compassionate. Help those who need it, because at some point we all do whether we admit it or not. This is what he was called to. I think we all are.
For some reason, I never posted a review here for this novel when I read it back in January of 2013. keeps reminding me of my shortcomings, so as I'm trying to be a good person, I herewith rectify my mistake in regards to this book...especially since the second book in the series, THE HEALER, by Gregg Luke, has recently appeared.

Here's what I wrote at the time "Dang it, Daron D. Fraley, you've had me up half the night! I just finished reading THIRTY-SIX. I couldn't put it down to go to bed, and now it's 4 a.m. I'll need toothpicks to keep my eyelids open today. Terrific book!"

How can I amplify on that? I'm not sure I can. I'm ordering THE HEALER so I can continue enjoying the journey I began with THIRTY-SIX.
